The EMT PASS app offers a valuable tool for reinforcing student learning and preparing them for the NREMT exam. Here are practical strategies for effectively integrating the app into EMT curriculum, drawing on insights from experienced instructors.
Don't wait until the end of the course to introduce students to the EMT PASS app and NREMT question style. Instead, consider a continuous integration approach:
Assign Review Sections After Each Module
For instance, assign the EMT PASS "Airway 1" review after the airway module. Save the second airway quiz for later NREMT preparation or remediation. This approach can also be applied to cardiac, medical, and trauma modules. The product has one quiz each for assessment, pediatrics, obstetrics, and operations.
Introduce Registry-Type Questions Early
The questions in EMT PASS are designed to be challenging, mirroring the difficulty of the NREMT exam. Integrating these types of questions early in the course helps students adjust their thinking and study habits in the right direction.
Dedicate Class Time to Question Review
Set aside some time during class to go over questions from the app. These questions might present scenarios or information slightly differently from textbooks or lectures. This is an opportunity to help students bridge the gap between memorization and application. Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills by discussing the rationale behind the correct answers and common misconceptions.
The EMT PASS app can also be a valuable tool for formative and summative assessment:
Include one or two questions from the app in your regular quizzes and exams. This serves several purposes. Firstly, it motivates students to engage with the app. Secondly, it familiarizes them with the style and rigor of registry-type questions throughout the course. Finally, it sets clear expectations for the type of questions they will encounter on the NREMT.
The EMT PASS app includes two 120-question final exams that can be instrumental in preparing students for the NREMT:
Administer Full-Length Exams in One Sitting
Encourage students to complete each 120-question final exam in a single sitting. This strategy helps them build stamina and get accustomed to the time constraints of the NREMT exam. Taking intermittent, shorter bursts doesn't replicate the experience of sitting through a longer, comprehensive exam.
Simulate the NREMT Testing Environment
Have students take one of the final exams in our EMT PASS app (EMT Review Plus final exams work too!) at the end of the course under simulated NREMT conditions. For example, impose a two-hour time limit, allow no phones or personal items, and require them to show identification. Providing a piece of paper for notes and requiring proper identification, just like at a Pearson Vue center, can further enhance the realism and reduce anxiety associated with the actual exam. Plus, students will finish the exam with diagnostic results on both NREMT and traditional content areas to guide them in preparation as they leave the class.
The EMT PASS app has been extensively revised to align with the new NREMT format. It now includes:
A new assessment section.
More TEIs (Technology Enhanced Items).
Both NREMT domain and traditional module diagnostic score reports in the final exams.
Educators should stay informed about these changes to maximize the app's effectiveness in their teaching.
By strategically integrating the EMT PASS app throughout your course, you can provide students with valuable practice, reinforce key concepts, and better prepare them for the challenges of the NREMT certification exam. Remember to utilize class time to discuss challenging questions and help students develop the critical thinking skills necessary for success.
